Exfoliation & Fruit Acid Routine
A fruit acid peel is a cosmetic skin treatment in which the uppermost layers of the skin are exfoliated in a controlled and gentle manner. As a result, the skin may temporarily become more sensitive to external factors.
To ensure your skin responds as well as possible to the treatment, we begin every session with a brief skin analysis and a personalised consultation. Together, we discuss your current skin condition, your skincare routine and any specific considerations, so that we can tailor the treatment to your individual needs.
Preparation
Proper preparation helps ensure a smooth and pleasant treatment experience. We recommend:
- Discontinue the use of retinol, retinal and AHA, BHA or other exfoliating products approximately 3–5 days before the treatment;
- to avoid mechanical exfoliation, brushing or highly irritating skincare products for a few days beforehand;
- Avoid intense sunlight and sunbeds for at least 48 hours prior to treatment;
- Do not have any waxing, sugaring or shaving carried out in the treatment area for at least 24 hours beforehand;
- Please arrive on the day of your treatment without make-up, if possible, or with your skin cleansed.
When you look your best
If your schedule allows, we’d be happy to schedule your exfoliation treatment for the late afternoon. The reason is simple: freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to light — an afternoon appointment gives it the whole night to recover before it’s exposed to daylight again.
Furthermore, the skin follows its own daily rhythm: during the day it tends to act in a protective capacity, whilst in the evening and at night it focuses more on regeneration — cell division in the epidermis is significantly more active at this time than around midday.
After the treatment
After a fruit acid peel, the skin needs a few days to regenerate. During this time, we recommend:
- Apply sun protection with an SPF of at least 50 every day and avoid direct sunlight as far as possible;
- to support the skin with mild, fragrance-free skincare and sufficient moisture;
- to avoid using retinol, fruit acids, exfoliants and other highly active ingredients for around 5–7 days;
- do not rub the skin or subject it to excessive strain;
- Saunas, steam baths, solariums and intensive physical exercise should be avoided as far as possible on the day of treatment.
A slight redness, a feeling of tightness or fine flaking may occur in the first few days and are among the possible skin reactions. Please do not mechanically peel or remove any flaking skin.
Individual skin conditions
Every skin type is unique. Certain skin conditions or health factors may affect the treatment. Please inform us of the following points before the treatment:
- irritated, damaged or sunburnt skin
- active inflammation, eczema or atopic dermatitis in the treatment area
- Herpes simplex or other acute skin infections
- a fresh shave, waxing or sugaring in the treatment area
- recent cosmetic or dermatological treatments (e.g. laser, microneedling or chemical peels)
- Current use of, or recently completed therapy with, isotretinoin (e.g. Aknenormin®, Roaccutan®)
- regular use of high-dose retinoids or prescription active-ingredient creams
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- known allergies or intolerances to cosmetic ingredients
Please discuss these points with us in advance so that we can carefully tailor the treatment accordingly. If you have any existing medical conditions, are currently undergoing medical treatment or have any concerns, please check with your doctor beforehand to ensure the treatment is suitable for you.
Important notes
Treatment results vary from person to person and depend, amongst other things, on skin condition, follow-up care and consistent use of sun protection.
Should you experience unusually severe or persistent discomfort following treatment, we recommend that you temporarily stop using the relevant skincare products and seek medical advice.
Realistic expectations
Two people, the same treatment, two different days afterwards — the skin decides for itself how to respond.
The rhythm. The epidermis renews itself in around four weeks — and it continues to do so throughout our lives, albeit more slowly as we get older. That is why our skincare routine follows the skin’s cycle: every ten to fourteen days, close enough to coincide with the renewal process, yet far enough apart to allow the skin barrier to fully rebuild in between. How many treatments you have in succession depends on your skin — four to six is a good start, and after that the rhythm takes over.
What becomes apparent and when — and what lasts. Many people describe their skin as smooth and fresh after just the first treatment; the overall complexion — evenness and texture — becomes apparent from the third or fourth session onwards. After that, it’s all about maintaining the results: at a more relaxed pace, often three to four treatments a year, the skincare regime continues to support renewal. And what happens between appointments also plays a key role: daily sun protection accounts for half the result — and is the most effective preventative measure we know of.
